Prior to joining SLC, Ian was a Principal Local Government Officer for almost 20 years with Tameside and Manchester Local Authorities. He was involved with the strategic planning and funding of post-16 education, and for 15 years he headed up the Student Finance service.

Ian also spent more than 3 years seconded to the Department for Education and Skills and subsequently the Learning and Skills Council to help manage the introduction of the EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) scheme in England.

Up to June 2011 over 2500 IAG practitioners have attended local briefings and workshops across the Region and Ian has built up a network of nearly 1400 IAG contacts in the Region who receive regular updates about student finance.
